| ![]() Dropbox isn't a new service but I hadn't known about it until recently when they released their blackberry client. It was a invite only beta program to start with which I was unfortunate enough to not included in. I never actually used it then but the beta client was opened up to all so I
decided to give it a try. I typically email myself photos which is quite annoying rather than connecting my blackberry to my notebook. This lets me upload them to my dropbox account as well as access things I upload on my computers. Since I've started using it, I've discovered how useful it
actually is and what more it can do. I work with a few groups of people on a regular basis and we frequently need to share files. We all know how horridly slow MSN and other file sharing services can be and how much of a headache it can be to send it to everyone. Basically, what we do is create a
folder in our dropbox and then share it with others. The people who have access to the folder can add, delete, and make changes to the files inside and everyone that's included in the group gets these changes almost instantly. It's quite possibly one of the best things I've discovered in a while.
You get 2gb of space to start out with for free and you can get up to 8gb more for referring users. If you're referred by another user, you also get 250mb extra. This works on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, Android, and BlackBerry. The major difference in this is the fact on the
computer clients, your files are actually stored on your harddrive in a folder rather than needing to "download them on demand" from a website when you need them. If you think you will find this to be useful, please sign up using my referral link. I appreciate the extra space and I'm sure you will appreciate the extra 250mb you get for doing it: http://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTk2MzE4MDM5

| ![]() Yeah DropBox is amazing. I use it to share files with game developers and it is alot better than email or having to upload it to some file hosting site. I guess thats all it really is though, a file hosting program for yourself and others if you link up with them.

I often need something from my notebook when I'm on my desktop and vice-versa so why not just store files like this in dropbox so both computers (and my phone) has an up to date copy at all times? It also looks on the local network before downloading it from dropbox servers to save bandwidth. With that being said, it's really a sync, backup, and collaboration service.

| ![]() My question is how is this any different/better than other "personal cloud" services? I use "Ubuntu one" to store/backup files now.(even though I use Windows) and it works perfectly. Easy to setup areas for personal files or public areas to share stuff. It even handles my bookmarks, contacts, etc. So, advantages of dropbox or do I just misunderstand what it does? --- http://sordie.co.uk http://twitter.com/@SordieEO

Does it keep the folders in sync on multiple computers, give you webaccess to them, and give you on demand access to said files on mobiles? It also allows you create a folder and then share it with other dropbox users. They can add, delete, and change files within it and each user that shares this automatically sync the changes. They're currently adding a permission system to the sharing. |
