@the above two posts.
Stars like our sun actually get hotter and bigger when they get older, not cooler so don't expect that freezing to happen.
If the sun only had 16 million years left to live everything on this planet would already be dead =P
In about 5.5 billion years time (long after life has already been wiped out on this planet by the heating of the sun boiling the oceans, incinerating everything and stripping the atmosphere) the sun will reach a point where it has used up most of it's hydrogen and it's reduced mass will
meanthereisn't enough gravity to hold itself in any more, expanding out to a size hundreds of times bigger than it currently is. This new massive size will easily consume closer planets, including earth, destroying them in it's 100 million celsius helium nuclear furnace.
So, something for us all to look forward too =]
Heh, Glad I purchased sunnies..

Re: 2012 yes or no?
I heard something about the earth changing directions as in Antartic and Artic facing the sun and the equator will be laying in the shadown of the earth. which means there could be huge storms in america or a desert in Paris etc. The earth would have a new ice time which would freeze every body
to death. then after that process everything rewinds and starts all over again.

Don't worry, Superman will just fly fast enough around the earth to reverse its rotation, thus reversing time itself and saving the planet yet again.

You mean, A polar reversal? xD Im at two ends with that, I mean, How do they know it will happen in 2012. I Think the time varies too much honestly...My dad said something about one happening twice in 50000 years, and the last one happening 780000 years ago..o_o

@Ananas: This is called axis drift and as far as we can observe happens at a rate of about 1 degree per million years. Don't expect a dramatic overnight 90degree axis change =P
As far as polar shift goes (changing magnetic poles), as long as the magnetic field remains stable. IE in place shifting, not flux reversal, then there wouldn't be that much to worry about. There is strong evidence this can happen quite rapidly (as short as 10 weeks for a complete change) and
although this could effect some aspects of our modern life it's not fatal to the planet. It's happened before and will probably happen again.
That doesn't make for good reading though so lets paint a worse case scenario:
The earths magnetic field does a lot more that simply make our compasses point. It's a giant magnetic force field preventing solar winds ripping away the atmosphere. If the shift is slow enough and there happens to be quite bad solar activity when it happens there is chance the magnetosphere will
be weak enough to allow the sun to remove a good layer of the atmosphere. Exposing us to massive amounts of UV radiation and killing pretty much every land animal.
Sorry that the sun is always the bad guy in my "ways the world could end". It keeps us alive, it's just me and the sun are in constant battle =P

You sure know alot about this.. ;o
I used to be afraid on how the world would end :P But why being afraid? It happends and you can't stop it.

Re: 2012 yes or no?
Of course December 21, 2012 will be real. After all, isn't every day real? As for the theories, I do not agree with the mass hysteria. Although, I have recently come across some things I did not know before, that do in fact deal with a sort of apocalypse, according to my studies. However, this
is nothing to worry about, as only a part of these things have been fulfilled.
In other words, if the world does not end on that day, then mass hysteria will take over as people panic, thinking it is their last day to live. People will be driven to do things they would not normally do, due to the hysterical idea of, "Oh, the world is ending today! Let's rob a bank/kill
somebody/rape somebody!" Of course, this is my personal opinion, and perhaps I put too little faith in humanity.
