Run Endless Online on Linux and Mac

Post #197323 Run Endless Online on Linux and Mac

You can run Endless Online on these platforms with only a few minor inconveniences.
All you need is the latest revision of WINE. The free and open-source Windows compatibility layer.

You don't have to do anything special; just install WINE (at least 1.7.44+ as that is what I've tested) and then
the game should run. Lowest tested version is 1.6.2 and the game stutters and crashes constantly. It's unplayable.

Currently, there are still a few issues though so I'll list the ones I'm currently aware of below. Please be sure to read these. ^-^;

  • No music. Sound works fine though. I'll look into seeing if I can get this working though.
  • The game will lock up sometimes. It doesn't happen very often (I've had it happen once in the past two days), but I'll try debugging this soon.
  • Your own messages will sometimes (or always?) not appear in the chat log after you send them. Switching tabs, receiving messages, and scrolling will make them appear though.
  • The chat log can become a little screwy. Again, switching tabs, receiving messages, and scrolling will resolve this.
  • Playing in fullscreen can cause some problems or not work at all. It screws up my desktop and even if I quit the game it doesn't fix itself making my desktop unusable.

Everything else should work fine, but if you have any other issues or questions feel free to let me know. Enjoy. ;D

  • For Debian/Ubuntu/Mint, you currently need to uninstall the wine package (which is 1.6) and install wine-development (1.7). This seems to break directly running .exe files which you can fix by running  update-binfmts --install wine-local /usr/bin/wine-development --magic MZ as root. If you leave the original wine package installed, you shouldn't install the binfmt handler and run EO directly under wine-development as wine-development ./endless.exe
  • For Ubuntu and Mint you can use this PPA to install the wine1.7 package instead: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
