| ![]() This is a trending thread on a few other large forums I frequent. It's supposed to be image thread, in which you post a photo or stock image of something relevant to the topic at hand, however it's not compulsory. In this case, it's "Post what you recently got for free!". A bit like a show and tell. Find something to share and go for it, camera in hand (or stock image) if you wish! In the last two weeks I've managed to rescue from the salvage lot:
All but the Quad i7 system work perfectly fine, but I suspect I'll be able to repair it with some minor logic board work. I'm surprised at the rest, especially the 2.5GHz Pro, as it's still a fairly modern system and doesn't appear to be defective at all. Hopefully can find a decent purpose for it. ( Due to input from certain community members, I've withdrawn all but a basic initial contribution to the thread. The thread can otherwise progress as normal. ) --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired)

| ![]() Kind of. I worked for a while as a Macintosh field service technician for a third party repairer. These days I still refurbish the machines, but mostly for the fun of it. As a result I do get some free machines every now and then, some new and some old, some functional and some damaged as their previous owners simply have no use for them. I've never worked for Apple though. Working on Apple hardware, definitely. Working for the company itself? Heh, they wouldn't even want me if I tried. I don't mesh well with their corporate culture apparently, but I'm not concerned about it. --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired)

It's not like a few pictures of him saying he got free Macs will influence you to buy one. Haven't gotten anything "free" recently. And no, I'm not in the mood to go on a tangent about what "free" means at the moment. --- Former multi-server mapper.

| ![]() Yep, I collect, repair and service Apple hardware. It's what I do. I work for third parties, contributing to sites like iFixit.com with advice and tips to help others fix their own stuff as well. For the most part, Apple would hate what I do, because for every existing machine I help fix it's basically another new machine they don't get to sell. In addition, most of the machines I repair I end up giving to people that need them much more than myself, and even some former members of this site have benefitted from machines I built or arranged for them, including Sausage - I assembled an AMD Athlon 64 system a few years back that if I recall he's still using, although it's quite outdated by now. It's something to do, you find out a lot about the hardware and it can be fun at times. --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired)

| ![]() Yet another useless topic. This topic is basically one person boasting about all the shit products they got for free...
|
| ![]() Well, contribute to the thread. Of course it'll look that way if all anyone sees is my post at the top and a significant amount of nothing below it. Besides, what constitutes a useless topic? This thread has been tried and tested on a number of other boards all over the internet and generally gets positive results. People normally love to drag out a camera or stock shots and share something with the others. It's never serious, a little fun at the most. Anyway, that's a very poor perception for a community to have. If nobody creates threads, nobody contributes, but if hostility is all that can be expected when someone creates a new thread - whatever it may be - then nobody will have any incentive to contribute and I think we have a problem. If it makes you feel any better though, I've stripped away all but a very basic contribution and left only the thread guidelines. --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired)

| ![]() Depends how old they are. If they're made during or after 2006, you can still get some reasonable use out of them. Anything older than that will still run, but will likely only run older software. You said G3s I believe? They're going back toward 2000-2002 at the very latest, so yeah, a bit outdated. I suppose another option is that some older machines are starting to go back up in value, so depending on the model you may be able to get something decent for them. --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired)

| ![]() Bottom of the case, most likely, they used to have a 5-digit code starting with M (eg. M1234) that would match up the models. Otherwise you could match them up visually using the photos over at http://apple-history.com by clicking "by family" > "PowerBook G3/G4" or whatever model category they fit in to. --- EOSERV.net Academy Of Trolls, Satirists & Sarcastics 5.5 Years Former Site Administrator / Moderation Team / Member (Retired) |
