Post #191145 With EOSERV for 4+ years

Recently figured I've been a registered user for 4 years now, I sometimes happen to go back in the forum pages to the last page to see how EOSERV was back in those days. Of course I can still remember those times.

Does anyone even think about that time? There were no DDoSers back then, well maybe a few.. but we actually helped one another, released things that we found and what not.
I happend to see that over time it didn't seem to work like that anymore. People figured stuff out and kept it to themselves, made things closed source (funny thing because eoserv is open source).

If you were there 4 years ago and played servers and what not.. what were your findings back then? What did you like and dislike?

Well i've been here a little under 2years and even then it was better people releasing stuff like fishing and mining and a few other codes. But now all you see is artist releases and maybe all the art isn't that good (My stuff xD) but it's just giving stuff to this community, I do understand different servers want to be more unique than others. EOServ just lately has soooo many trolls that you dont take anything serious and makes you not wanting to click links incase of meatspin or some daft shit.

@Ananas Back then there were always DDoSers, or problems, Chaosdog (One of the first few to start doing this) Even got a drawing of himself posted on eoserv home news which showed him pressing a button. Which has since been deleted by Sausage.

We also had alot of duplication bugs and broken code and server crashers, it was only later that DDoS really came into play it started happening when script kiddies didn't get admin on the server they wanted.

But long before that there were also SQL injection attacks going on and has been for ages, as for now i think this forum is at somewhat peace except for the trolls.

FE started in 2009, and since then there has been a lot of shit gone on, not once has it stopped or ended.

This was the first trailer video for FE ever made which was uploaded to youtube on April 19th, 2009:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtxtH8ToFo8

This youtube video will show you what it was like back then while server owners like myself had no code not even NPC's working correctly.

If we found bugs, we tried to help one another to fix these instead of abusing these bugs. I remember some bug where Sausage would hop onto my server being able to pull any item from out of the locker..

Or where he forgot to add an exception on the bank bob where you could put in as much money as you wanted even if you didn't have the amount of gold.

Post #191151 Re: With EOSERV for 4+ years

Things have changed a whole lot here. When I first joined eoserv there were a lot of people making servers, I suppose with a dream of creating the next eo. Eoserv was fantastic and developing quickly to which a lot of people wanted a piece of this. Ananas I agree there were a lot more people releasing things and helping people back then, but in a way eo is being pushed to its limitations in a lot of ways. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that you cannot do more with it, but the excitement of something new every few days is slowly becoming every few months.

Then you look at how the forum is now, you have a lot of artists contributing to eoserv, but less programmers. A lot of useless topics which mean nothing to most but still keep people coming back to read.

I think that eoserv is taking its natural course, due to limitations but the family here are fighting to keep alive something they all love.

Dont forget the eoserv was nowhere near completion back then either and it was missing lots of crucial systems. There's much left stuff to add to it now then there was back then.

There was unfinished stuff in the source and I actually had stuff to work on in EOSERV besides hacking stupid shit in. The curiosity was what kept me and why I loved working on EOSERV. Decoding packets was absolutely my favorite thing to do and then be able to add the packets. The days where NPCs weren't even added yet.

I've tried releasing code but, code isn't as interesting as art, so most of the releases never got any replies.

That's mainly because of the laziness of most people. Back in the days everyone wanted those neat features. Now they simply download EOSource or other binairy versions that don't need any coding skills. They now lack pixels so they're basically waiting for pixel artists to release this stuff.

@Addison, you're right. Finding the package and getting them to function properly into your server was amazing. I would go on main (old) and collect packages from for example guild bob and tried to implement those into my server.

Maybe you need a new game to try and emulate, lol.

I'd love to learn how to code but i just don't know where to start and what is best to start on VB, Java or C etc

I loved making SCAR scripts as it felt like coding xD Making loads of autoing scripts, But when EO Test died so did my passion to do any of this :/

Wow, I'll be here 4 years too soon. It's crazy to think that it doesn't even seem like 4 years.. It seems like i just started playing EO haha and yet it's been 7 years i think which isn't too long like some of you guys but yeah. I honestly think that we could bring this community back to the (Helping, Releasing,Etc) state that it once was. Although, this would require heavy moderation from the moderators and administrators which i don't see happening.

They usually can do their job by deleting spam topics and stuff pretty quickly. Hey whatever happened to kenobi? He was my favorite :(
