Forum :: Lounge :: Laptop only connecting to my home wireless

Wasn't sure where else to put this. Details below.

First off, it took me a little while to figure out how to port forward. Once I did, everything seemed to be running smoothly. I could host my servers from my laptop on a wireless connection. However, now it won't connect anywhere else. My brother has the same problem, and he didn't even port forward... Does anyone know what could be causing this? I get the vibe that it had something to do with the server its self, because I was able to connect to other networks before. Also, if I connect to another network via Ethernet, it works fine. 

I'm going to be away from home for a few days soon, and would really like to connect to other networks wirelessly :/

If you can clarify this then it will greatly help.

Are you moving your laptop after you portforward? If the database and server is setup on your laptop and you are moving it around then it won't work. Wireless connection or not.

Someone can elaborate more or correct me later if needed.

Not really sure what you mean but port forwarding your router shouldn't affect your laptops connectivity to WiFi's ..

If what you mean is "Do you try to move the laptop when the server is running" then no. 

Oh and I should mention that it kind of  connects. It recognizes that there are wireless networks, and will "connect" with limited access. (as in no internet access)

Could it have something to do with the fact that even if the server isn't running, there's still a part of my laptop that checks to see if certain ports it's used to connecting through?

I wish I had more information, I'm kind of making random pokes and prods seeing if I can figure it out :/

Is there a setting on the laptop, not the router, that checks to see if ports are open when connecting to other networks?

I meant don't run a server on a laptop unless you plan on leaving it at your house. That or run your server using a host or on a computer you don't plan on moving.

Oh. yeah, I did kind of forsee some issues with running a server off of a laptop...

But I think  may have figured out my issue. I have my ip set manually, and when I try to connect to other networks, maybe it tries to keep the ip I set, which may conflict with other devices on the network. Hopefully, by setting it to obtain an automatic address, this can be solved. Won't really have a chance to test my theory for a few hours, possibly a day or two though.

Umm I'm not sure I get what you mean, but I think this will help:

Your IP might have changed, check again and re-port forward.

I also set up a static IP on my Wi-fi, but it still doesn't work..
