Re: Night/day effect in EO
It works out pretty well since they have zones that have static lighting anyway which is what I think should be implemented. Real time + static lighting.

You rarely post but, when you do, it's something incredible like this.

Re: Night/day effect in EO
The implementation I am working on would actually play a lot on day time. Different NPC's spawning at different day times might create a different set of items for players playing at different day parts. This would encourage a huge strategy curve as well as a diverse economy. I think it would actually work well in real time rather than making it day/night several times a day. Anyway, do it however you like and stick with it. People will complain either way.

I'm not really sure yet about the radius the lantern should have and about the color maybe more yellow/orange to give it a warmer feeling?
if the object id is 7 (a lantern) it will light up when it's night.

That looks sweeeeeeeet! As for your lighting, use what they use in 3-D graphics, and use light sources. I.E. Light coming from the lamp. I dunno how realistic you want it though. You could have maps that are almost pitch black that adds to a story line or is event-ish or something like that.

Re: Night/day effect in EO
The only problem with using such awesome effects is the Sega-era graphics EO uses. If the choice is blended shadows, a huge upgrade to the graphics would be more fitting. Sadly this is EO and to make it look fluid it would need a dummied down lighting effect from the 16-bit era. Kinda like putting nice rims on a rusted piece of shit car.

It would look better to add a transparent blue to the entire map including the character avatar and use the lighting effect for things like torches and lamp posts. Black is such an ugly night effect. I think you will like the result better when using blue.
I agree with this statement.
Also, Another good way to get a day/night effect is to have two maps for each area, one darker than the other, and have the game coded so every hour or two, the maps change to show that it's day and night. As for the lighting color, it should definitely have a mix of yellow and orange to give it
the warmer feeling. That warmer-feeling light color with the dark blue would look awesome.
Just a suggestion. Great work though, +1 ---

If there was someway to cause the colors to darken when the sun sets, that could work as a day into night conversion. Plus too, it might look better with EO's graphics. ---

Something like this. It just looks bad, because it's one color, but if you made it with the original tiles it would look like something like the bottom image.
