Anybody anticipating the release of the Surface Pro? I'm really excited for it. I've been looking for a mobile solution for a while now to complement my desktop since I'm a student. Having a desktop isn't exactly the easiest for taking notes in class.
My needs are a good note-taking platform that is lightweight and mobile. Additionally, I want something that can run Visual Studio. I learned this the hard way after I bought an Android tablet and had to rely on RDP in a very undersized (1280x768) display compared to my triple monitors at
home.
I've also been looking for something that can run games decently enough - I'm not looking for super high quality graphics and fast load times, just something I can carry around with me and play with friends at their house so I don't have to lug a tower around.
From my experience with the Android Tablet I purchased, I also want something that can upgrade to a keyboard that doesn't click in mechanically. I've had a few problems with the keyboard attachment for the tablet I bought, even though its quite slick when it actually works.
I settled on the Surface Pro partially because I'm a Microsoft fanboy (I'll admit it) and partially because it seems to be best suited to fit the stated needs. However, I haven't done much research on other Win8 Pro tablets on the market.
Questions for y'all:
- Is anyone else anticipating the release of Surface Pro, or do you see Surface as a failure by Microsoft to compete with Apple's iPad that will eventually die off like their Zune product line?
- Are there any other tablets on (or soon to be on) the market that do a particularly fine job running Win8 pro that match the needs I've stated above and are comparable to Surface Pro?
- On a slightly related note, can anyone recommend a good source control system for Windows platforms that will allow me to share source code between my desktop and whatever Win8 tablet I settle on?
