| ![]() Lulz. Ubuntu is a good open source desktop suite although compatibility with most games on windows comes with a nasty performance sacrifice to run "Wine". If you want a faster PC in general, figure out which version of windows you are running and follow the service configuration guides at http://www.blackviper.com/ For instance, on the Windows 7 SP1 service configuration page, a way down the page is a spreadsheet. On the right hand side of the spreadsheet are the "safe", "tweaked" and "barebones" list. Follow these examples to disable running services in the background to maximize your windows performance. As mentioned multiple times, use CCleaner to delete all the obscure temp. crap from your PC and disable start up programs and services. Disable any toolbars in IE, or check out your plugins/addons you have in Chrome/Firefox. You can have as many programs installed on your PC as you want, so long as they don't start automatically or have background services. Some programs have options within them to change background processes, some programs you have to set to manual yourself (e.g. windows messenger, etc). Tweaking your windows is best done by yourself following detailed, accurate guides. Downloading crappy programs to speed up your PC (except CCleaner), almost always ends up with bad results. Take care. Edit: extra note, use windows task manager to look up running processes, and search them on google to see what they do. If they're not vital to windows, you can safely set them to manual of even disable them. --- Web developer, currently looking for graphic artists / designers.

And your processor can be overclocked from 400MHz to 533MHz. --- Web developer, currently looking for graphic artists / designers.

While I respect old hardware, a newer machine would be more apt to "running things faster". But if you must, I also highly recommend Klutz's suggestion of heading over to http://www.blackviper.com/ It's like a Windows XP services bible. Next thing you'd want to do is, run CCleaner, then a disk defragmenter. I suggest Defraggler, which comes from the same company as CCleaner. Edit: Please also note while Linux is a good substitute and can even help an older machine like that come to life, Ubuntu is no longer one of the flavors of Linux that help do this. Sorry to say, but it's true. Not only that, but OS installation might seem too advanced for you. If you want to demo a Linux distro though, I suggest burning a Live CD copy of Puppy Linux. --- Wish upon a star!
