Just opening the chest doesn't do anything, the way servers show the items spawning are based on if you're near it, I believe, as well as if you have the key.

Near as in 1 tile away. If you step away you won't get notified of any items in the chest.

How near do you have to be exactly? If I could look inside a chest and see items from 4 spots away, that would be perfect.

If the chests are anything like vaults, I know that when I was messing with vault packets trying to get a bot to put items into it it checks for x and y both when you open it as well as put items in it if I remember correctly.
