Get a mac....
Lol, no i heard that alienware laptops are amazing for gaming but i don't know much about them apart from that they're expensive.
Yes definatley get a desktop if you have space and don't want to game on the move, lol, I have a $800 desktop that will run skyrim on ultra high graphics without any effect on the FPS, BF3, and pretty much any other game you can think of.

Get a dell.
My desktop was around $1200 so I bet you could get a really good dell laptop for your budget.

My suggestion - i cannot fault it, I have the i7 one but this one is pretty much just as good, very fast, loads of storage room, great RAM.

Don't build one unless you know what you're doing, my friend tried and he ended up paying someone to do it for him it.

Re: gaming laptop?
Building a computer is easy as making a pie. All you got to do is take two weeks out of your life and start watching
youtube videos. Also read tutorials, because they are more descriptive. I took me a week to learn, but I also took lot of time learning what each component does.
But picking out parts is the hardest thing. It took me forever to look for the right parts and if
each component would work together.
