A day and night system doesn't have to be in real time necessarily. It could change from day and night every hour or so. Also, it would be cool if you had an
in-game time sort of like harvest moon. :o

Re: Kalandra II
By my opinion modern games should give to creators the flexibility of changing stuff easy and quick without making major changes inside code to prevent bugs etc.
I believe an engine like that should be able to have multiple layers on mapping, that each layer can be triggered from various events or quests etc. So all players would be on same map, but only certain players would see certain things.
Guild system is importand, pvp system, at least a basic auction house because the future of a game is very close connected with its economy.
Crafting would be good but i dont think its necessary.
Weather system will give only a better map result BUT a server time system is importand for triggering events (day-night, dungeons maybe, or even a sqedualed maintenance etc)
Graphics should not be hardcoded (anyone that had a server here know the result of hardcoding these)
Pet system, housing system, nothing is importand but many can bring a lot of players if they exist.
If its not a 2.5d neither an isometric then would be a 2d or 3d? Personlly i prefer 3d. Or at least something like Diablo. But again that is so much work i dont believe you can make it in 4 months. But i hope you will have a good progress untill then.
I wish you the best for your new project, i also hope to try it soon.
I dont think a mmo should have all these features, but these i want to see in an engine that will give me the tools to make my p.server.

Re: Kalandra II
just off the top of my head i would like to see.
1. story board would be great addition. "animation story lines at start of game and/or start of a quest/ or achievment."
2. a form of a globle map.
3. a advanced npc AI Scripting " the option to have the npc run away/attack based on the players stats or interactions"
4. differant player views.
5. option for custom music

Also, it would be nice to have an option to switch between 4 directional and 8 directional movement kinda like byond does. :P

It'd be cool to have a weather system in addition to the night/day effect. Or if you go into different "season" maps it does like leaves falling, snow, rain, thunder/lighting. That'd be bad ass.

Re: Kalandra II
@Sordie: Sqlite is not very optimal for a server with a decent amount of players. I have ran 100+ in both MySql and Sqlite and I can say with much confidence that a server with near that capacity or better may suffer from writing to flat file. Optional MySql would be much loved. On a gameplay note, I have much love for a well designed strength/weakness (aka elements although not all types are elemental) system as well as a flexible event system. Kudos on this effort. Producing both a client and a server along with any needed software for editing purposes will definitely keep you busy. I just hope this is a project you will continue to support and expand upon. We have enough half-written software these days :P

Just one question. Are there any HIGHLY successful 2D MMORPGs today?
Can't wait to see your software, might inspire me to write my own.

Well trickster online and maplestory are pretty successful, but there are not many.

Depends, do you count dungeon fighter online a 2d mmorpg? Edit: Was about to say maplestory but saw above post.
