| ![]() What do you guys use/what do you recommend as far as hosting goes?
|
| ![]() Why would you want to pay for hosting, you already got a laptop to run it for free. That is better than any free webhosting your going find, since you are in control and easy access to editing files. But if you want to host your server 24-7 and pay for it, than get someone off of these forums. I seen someone hosting them for free, but it probably better to stick with your girl friends laptop.

| ![]() I bought a pretty outdated tower off of ebay for only £20 ($30ish).. Runs everything I need it to i.e. Webservers and Minecraft Server with ease so I see no need to buy host persay :P --- If money doesn't grow on trees, then why do banks have branches?

| ![]() You could use a VPS. But before using it I recommend you to launch your server, if it is successful after a week or so, you may buy it, if not, than don't waste your money. --- Video Producer at Bones Underground www.bones-underground.org

| ![]() Na it's not just for Eoserv. Frankly from what i've seen hosting a EO server doesnt really take up too too much at all, so I understand your points. I was more just looking for something dedicated was all to keep a decent uptime with thing's. Will keep it all in mind however.

| ![]() Running an old tower 24/7 might add a fair your electricity bill, and most home Internet plans aren't really suitable for hosting busy services (and some forbid it, read the AUP you agreed to first), and you give yourself a pretty big liability to hackers (if you're hosting from your own network you'd better know the basics of computer security) and attacks (it's not fun when you can't get to Facebook or porn because Elevations woke up cranky that day). You also risk lagging your users to death when you want to torrent a movie. burst.net provides some really shoddy service, but you can get a fairy capable VPS for a low as US$6/month. You might want to look at their "premium" VPS (about twice the cost) if you don't want your players disconnecting every 5 minutes, or more reputable cheap hosts like vpslink.com (I haven't used them since they got bought out, the reliability was going downhill during the transition, but that might not be an issue anymore). If you're only looking to host a website, the best way to shield yourself from the burden of maintaining a VPS is shared web hosting, and your host will typically provide you far better availability and protection from DoS attacks than running a web-server on a VPS. It's also generally a lot cheaper. The down-side is, most shared web-hosts will give everyone on the same server read access to all of your files (there's a technical reason why it's more efficient to do this).

| ![]() Bladex, to answer your question I won't use any hard words, nor even because I know it correctly. But my guess is that when you buy a VPS, the program might ask you to add your server files with an .EXE. The VPS will open the .EXE and run it 24/7. And if it crashes it will restart automatically. Sorry for the dull explanation tried my best... lol --- Video Producer at Bones Underground www.bones-underground.org
