Internet Persona's do you have one?

Post #127930 Internet Persona's do you have one?
So this tl;dr that I've wrote came from me reading this: [Link removed] Posted the article on a lower post since the link popped up on zero's nod32 D;

SoIwasthinking today, the person I am on here and other platforms I useto converse with online friends/people isn't me. I've formed a sort of "second personality" don't get me wrong at times I log on here andask serious questions about life, likecollegeanstuff. But the person I am out side of this place and msn/skypeis a total different person. I've taken on the persona of a troll/asshole and ran with it, it happened about the time I 1st played EO when I was 14-ish (which was my 1st computer mmorpg) and its just stuck with me. Some timesIdon'trealize others don't hide who they really, which isn't a bad thing.. I mean for me it is because I will take shit a little to far. But I've noticed when people "troll" or "rage" me it doesn't effect my real life because they are attacking my persona not me. Others let it effect rl and takeitintothe real world, so why not just put the mask of the internet on..I'd describe how I am irl but that would defeat my persona now wouldn't it? lol.

So my question is do you have a persona? Is the person you allow others to see onlinea different person from how people irl see you? If so why? Do you do it to protect your identity? Or is it for another reason all together?

Post #127970 Re: Internet Persona's do you have one?

From my point of view I see the internet as a whole, as an entirely new pier group so when I did start to play MMORPG's like you say when I was 14-ish, I did kinda re-invent myself to be a bit of a knob when I see an opportunity to be funny or w/e because it was entertaining and yes I did have people throw shit back at me but I didn't take it personally because well.. It's the internet right XD? What someone thinks of me half way across the world makes absolutely no difference to my day to day life really.. But that was back when I was 14-ish. Since starting college, I've calmed down a lot on the internet, become a lot more chilled on MMORPG's and have made some pretty decent friends which I keep in contact with and I like them to know the real me when I start getting to know them. So in answer to your question:

Earlier on in life: Yes, I did have a different internet persona, but that was just because I wanted to re-invent myself in somewhere that I wouldn't get directly judged or put down
Now: Not so much, because I just like to meet new people and make more friends all across the globe :)

I see where your coming from, I still do put on that persona. I mean sure there are a few select friends who know the real me but thats because those are the few I actually plan on meeting one day.. the rest imo don't need to know me for me. lmfao.

That's true I guess haha, but even so if you want to meet people on the internet, you're going to have to let them know the real you before hand :P because I mean I've met some pretty incredible people on the internet (one 15 year old boy that was a child carer for both his parents and only got 3 hours of computer usage a week) and we just got talking of the most random of things and actually happened to meet in a game of Dungeon Defenders haha so yeah. There are some pretty spectacular people out there.. Aside from that, I met one girl from Colorado through a friend and it just so happens she's coming over to England to see what our Universities have to offer, and she's staying with me for 3 days :P And I met her back when I was 14 and had this different persona, so we've both seen eachother grow up. It's pretty awesome in that respect if you meet someone on the internet and know them for so long but you haven't actually met, then an opportunity like this arrives lol.. Makes the world seem so small.

Well maybe I should remove the link lmfao.. nothing popped up on mine.. Dx /scan time.

Anways here's the article so no one has to click the link just in case.

Is That Your Real Name?

The real surge of multiple personas came about in the last few years with the widespread use of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Personas are so common that it’s unusual to find someone using their actual name and information. Many people see no problem with this, and don’t see any difference between using different personas on the Internet and using them in real life. After all, you probably behave differently around your parents than you do around your friends, your husband than your girlfriends, your doctor rather than your soccer teammates.

When you’re a freelancer, it’s easy to bleed your professional and personal lives together–after all, often times you’re working from home or coworking in a place outside your office, so it’s tough to really feel like you need a professional identity. After all, as a freelancer you’re representing yourself right? Kind of. You need to keep a line drawn, and this is where personas are perfect.

Freelancers can maintain “professional” personas for their work related interactions and “personal” personas for other interests.

Here is an example of how people use personas to maintain different identities for their personal and professional interests:

  • Susan is a teen-aged Anime geek. She maintains a large collection of manga. She can tell you every detail of every character in all of her favorites and is considered an expert by many of her Facebook followers. She also draws in Anime style and has a large fan base eagerly awaiting the next chapter of the original Anime series that she writes and illustrates.
  • Eighteen year old BrendaB has several level 80 characters in the widely popular massively multi-player game called World of Warcraft. Although young, she is one of the founders of a large guild of players and often mentors “newbies” when they join. You can count on seeing her in game at least 20 hours a week.
  • Laurel is a 36 year old professional copywriter with a long list of customers who receive short messages about her availability via her Twitter account. She is well known and respected among the professional copywriting community because she has never missed a deadline and will take on emergency and quick turn over work–and get it done.

Are You Surprised?

Would it surprise you to know that all three of these personas are really the same person? Would you feel deceived if you found out–or would you even care? If you’re a freelancer, do you maintain different identities to let out different parts of your personality through your work? Your answer will probably define your generation.

Baby boomers and Generations X and Y mostly defined themselves as honest and strove to maintain their reputation among their peers as a personal brand. Most were not born into the digital age. Generation V–the first truly digital and virtual generation–has grown up with digital media for learning, sharing, and, in some cases, socializing, and the concept of personas is readily accepted.

Eh, I'm pretty much the same on and offline. In fact, small behavior changes that are rooted in my involvement in online communities actually affect my overall personality offline as well. Surprisingly, for the better. (I'm an oddity I suppose.)
