Post #115105 For software stealers among our falling community

There are a lot of.. I'll say it directly: posers and thieves among us nowadays. Just look at latest EOSERV modifications made by users.

How does it work?

  1. Make some changes to OpenSource EOSERV under zlib license (like removing an original author from logo and changing the software name)
  2. Remove the license file from project (and sourcecode too, of course)
  3. Create a shitty thread claiming it's your own software
  4. ???
  5. Profit
Are you guys serious?(I think you know who I mean.)
Why won't you code your OWN EO server instead?CTRL+V doesn't count That would be more fun and more needed than closing the source of already existing software.

FOR THE OPEN SOURCE!

Discuss.

Another useless topic. Yes u remove the license.txt do some modifications. Who cares? Not even sausage does, Everyone, including the maker knows every credit goes to sausage.

Clearly it's not stealing the software, otherwise we wouldn't post the topic for it on EOSERV forums correct?

You didn't note anywhere it's an EOSERV modification. No licence file, Sausage's notes in the config.ini are removed. A fucking joke? I think so.

Anyways, I think people should release their codes on the Wiki page. Everyone could build it's own stable revision and help each other fix their codes ;).

Maybe because everyone already knows it's an EOSERV Modification? And he does mention in his topic about EOSERV and Sausage.

To be honest with you I think it would be far better to add a "bugs" section to the forum, so bugs with the current release can be posted there, and someone with a considerable amount of programming knowledge //not saying any of you don't// can work on this current release along with sausage, which I think they're already is some community input into the main release. I could be wrong but I think this help is mainly coming from the moderators or administrators from the forum.

Back on topic. It's not really stealing software. It's merely adding to and/or modifying current code within the release and that is the exact reason why its open source so people can improve on and add to the current state of the software. I like making all my projects open source because I like to see what kind of things other people can do with the base of something I've created. Which from a programmers point of view, I think is pretty awesome. So that's just my view on the subject.

The problem is that the modified software is being updated along with credits and on another license. That's sick.

Depends if Sausage wants to involve other people to his project :P

To be quite honest with you, The code that's released from the SVN of this forum is licensed to sausage. Anyone who has any common knowledge and some ability to read code in front of them, they'd be able to distinguish the code that is being released under the license of EOSERV (probably not well but never the less, be able to distinguish). So you can just laugh in the face at anyone who tries to fob code off as their own. I think the most fun out of making or running a server with modifications is the sense that you were actually able to make modifications that work, with something that functions well already. So in my eyes, the people that are releasing their 'own' revisions is pointless xD..

Slightly off topic. I've just re-read the subject. "our failing community"? The community is far from failing. The simple fact that you made this topic is just a sheer testament of the fact that this community isn't failing at all. It's made conversation and has brought a few issues to light. The way I see it: everyone's pitching in, helping to improve, modify or question what's already been achieved.

The custom revisions are pointless of course. If you want to show your work, why not just run a server using that revision. It's the best way people can test it. Also, upgrading / improving the code is the best part of making a server right now xD.
Anyways, I'd like to see the "bug" section here.

Post #115119 Re: For software stealers among our falling community

I understand where your coming from but it even the coders like ananas, hollow, etc

will also be considered as stealing work and calling it their own.

Eoserv was made by sausage and vult-r, Sausage was nice enough to release this for us to use and guess what people modify em by adding extra stuff and then they call it their own.

Like Ice & Fire the program and everything was made by sausage but then hollow toke it made it a closed source added in codes and stuff.

We use it but who really cares if people are calling them their own.

Same goes to mapping because the gfx's and the program it's self was made by suasage and vult-r, Pixeling is the only thing we should care about and certain codes thats about it.

You sound a bit retarded :P no offense but im almost positive Sausage didnt make any of the original EO Graphics. And Vult-r didnt help with Eoserv. As far as i know anyway

Look Guys... I think this is what he means.

"Same goes to mapping because the gfx's and the program it's self was made by suasage and vult-r, Pixeling is the only thing we should care about and certain codes thats about it."

Most of the gfx were made by Rexor and Arvid. Vult made a map editor, but i'm sure very few people in the EOserv community actually have it. (Most likely Sausage and/or Apollo.) On the other hand, Sausage and Rena made the map editors we use today.
