Go Intel, nVidia, x58 architecture if you can, and build it yourself.

I ordered parts from Newegg and built a nice computer for $800. It has 6 USB slots, 3 USB 2.0 slots. I just watched a youtube video and read the installation manual for all the parts in order to build it.

Make sure they all work together. Post the list if you want me to check them out and possibly help find cheaper parts or better prices, or just better stuff for your money. I helped Exile/Deathx build a quadcore for 200-300$, and my i7-950 + dual gtx 470's custom rig was only $1000 (and this was before sandy bridge so it was more expensive). So I'm usually pretty good with finding good deals and all.

You won't need more than 4-6 gigs of ram for a gaming computer. More than that is just a waste of money. Unless you do hardcore video editing or something that hogs memory like a boss.
