Ugh hhhhhmmm alright listen up

A postive + a postive equals a negative

A negative + a postive equals a postive.

Knowing that the problem is simplier to under stand so 21 Divided by -7.

Alright so 21 is a postive and 7 is a negative knowing that we look at our handy little thingy over here

A postive + a postive equals a negative

A negative + a postive equals a postive.

So all we have to do is do 21 divided by 7 normally I suggest a calculator or something
So 21 divided by 7 gave me 3.
Since 21 is a postive and 7 is a negative that means the answer must be a postive.
so our final answer will be 3.

Also on a more personal matter, lolss don't act like a smart ass to me when your in the seventh grade.
PISSES ME OFF!

You're an idiot.

Wtf how?

The answer is -3. If your mocking Lolss for being in the 7th and not knowing how to do this then you sir must be in 3rd.

Lol lmfao I'm mocking him cuz he's an ass. 2nd do the math again.

The Answer for the first is -3, im in Calculus, you're retarded.

Oh, and HOW DOES A POSITIVE PLUS A POSITIVE EQUAL A NEGATIVE?!? 2+2 IS NOT -4!!!

Exactly what i was telling the moron.

I know, you were correct, just i had to break it down barney style for him apparently.

@Eternity, Your teacher should be fired and hung with several hundred snake skins.

I don't even know if he teaches anymore =/
I just got my formula's messed up I'm like a 75% average in math back in junior high. =/

That's average, you should still know the bare basics of math, or you should have gotten 0-50% in math...
It's been years and I always got my formulas messed up =/ Don't act like you've never forgot a formula.

Never have I forgotten a formula that meant something, such as + x + = +, + x - = -, - x - = +, they're things you use every time you do math.. Plus, Physics, Chem, Bio, Calc, Trig, Geo, and Alg 1, 2, & 3, you can't forget formulas or you'll fail, and I've always kept a 85-95averageintheseclasses... so no, I do my best to remember every formula I'm taught.
=/ Well I don't usually remember stuff like that =/
The only thing that I think I still remember is the pythgreom theory the a2+b2 thing?
Idk if thats even the right formula even more. =/
Also math wasn't always my strongest subject in school it was my weakest =/ It's just cuz i forgot my formulas =/

Post #106621 Re: Err, Math Help? lmao

Don't know if this has been solved because I didn't bother reading all the posts, so here is how I'll explain it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_line

First, you need to understand what negatives and positives mean. Positives are just regular numbers. For example, say someone gained $300. That's +300. Negatives are to the left of the number line. For example, say you had to pay $250. That would be represented as -250.

A little fun fact:

4 - 3 = 1

The 3 is actually a -3, and it assumes adding.

So it's the same as:

4 + -3 = 1

But the negative takes over so that's why we represent it as 4 - 3.

Next, there is no certain rule to tell if a answer is going to be positive or negative if you're adding.

But, there is a rule to tell if a answer is going to be positive/negative with multiplying and dividing.

Positive times/divided by a positive is a positive.

Negative times/divided by a positive is a negative.

Negatives times/divided by a negative is a positive.

4 * 4 = 16

4 * -4 = -16

-4 * -4 = 16

I think of it as two negatives makes a positive and that negative always takes over.

Srsly, this is basic algebra and i've done it in 6th grade. We do much bigger equations than this. These are just basics :/

In ninth grade you will get to do more things. Rationalise the denominator ( remove the root from denominator) etc,

ex-

21         you'll have to remove the root from denominator. So these are just basics which should be cleared on Tips!

@Eternity Math builds on itself every year. Meaning you will use what you learned last year this year. So if you forgot something as basic as negative numbers you are probably fucked this year. Or just a dumbass.

@Lolss stick with it buddy, everyone else has offered some good stuff.

They are parentheses, you do whats inside these first in a equations. Follow the rules of PEMDAS - Parentheses, Exponents, Multipication & Division, Addition & Subtraction. Here, i'll show you:

The equation would be like: 5 * 7 * (2 + -9) =, now you follow the rules of PEMDAS
P = Parentheses
5 * 7 * (2 + -9) = is simplified down to 5 * 7 * -7 <- here we can either get rid of the parentheses, or keep them if we want, either way with only a single number in it you just look as if they weren't there.
E = Exponents
There are no exponents in this problem, and exponent would be a "to the power of" problem. 28 = Two to the power of 8, usually shown like that, or can be shown like this: 2^8
M = Multiplication
5 * 7 * -7 = do this in order from left to right, so 5 times 7 is 35, now your problem is simplified to 35 * -7 =, which can also be multiplied, so 7 times 35 is 245, but since the 7 is negative, and a negative times a positive is negative, you just make that 245 negative.
Now you're done, just rewrite and you have the answer, 5 * 7 * (2 + -9) = -245
