Suggestions for a laptop/tablet?

Post #99790 Suggestions for a laptop/tablet?

I've decided a 5 year old laptop boasting 1.7ghz and 512mb of ram isn't good enough anymore, although the stickers on it add tons of sentimental value.

So...I'm buying something cool! I can't be more specific than that because I have no idea what yet. I'm looking for something that isn't expensive, runs well, and has a webcam. I also need it to be able to remote into my desktop (so I can use it in class and such).

I'm considering laptops just because they provide much more functionality than tablets. Brands that are out (for various reasons): Toshiba, HP/Compaq. Also want something Intel based, and with decent enough graphics.

I'm considering tablets because they are really cool toys. Every time I've played around with one, its blown me away. I'm not filtering by brand on this but I definitely want something running Android (no iPads). I've highly considered the Xoom but I don't know if that's the best choice anymore because of all the other ones out there right now. If I get a tablet I'm going to get wifi-only (none of that 3g data plan crap).

So....suggestions? The deal is either laptop OR tablet. I'm not that rich. Thanks guys! If I think of any other details about what I'm looking to buy I'll add them here ^.^

If you want something that is cool and has good graphics I'd suggest an alienware, although I've never owned one, I've played with them before. They look pretty cool and I've heard they are really awesome gaming computers, but they are more on the pricey side so be prepared to have some $$ if you're gonna get one of those.

I always buy DELL XPS laptops. I currently use an old XPS M1730 (which is hardly portable) and an XPS 15. The only problem I have with the XPS 15 is the screen res is only 1366x768 but if you can live with that it's a pretty nice laptop.

If you use a computer a lot, always buy a nice computer - He who lives by the sword..  Should buy a bloody nice sword!

Sooordie!! You either gave the wrong link or mispelled XPS 17 :P

Anyways, I'd say the Laptop XPS 17 which sordie gave the link for 2 posts above.

Great processor and some great rams, which should get you ahead of the gaming :P

I looked into the M1730 and I think I found a winner. Even more expensive than my desktop was though (and sadly more than I can afford :( )! As for the XPS 17...wayyy too expensive. :P

I like the suggestions guys! Sorry if it seems like I'm just shooting them all down instantly. Any tablet suggestions at all?

*edit* Forgot the obligatory "OMGOMGOMG hai Sordie!" :P

yeah they have an overheating problem due to a p[oorly designed heatsink. I overcame this on mine by placing bottlecaps underneath it to create more airspace, well that and blowing it out when it needs it. almost a year of being on more or less 24/7 now and no major complaints.
