I'm posting this up here because something tells me some of our more technically oriented members will enjoy it.

I have a few computers. Mostly Apple Macs. There's a couple of PCs as well, one sold to a new home, and other which I was planning on selling, a Lenovo ThinkCentre desktop PC. Pretty basic spec, 2.0GHz Intel Dual Core, 2GB RAM, 200GB HDD. Last night I decided to fire it up and install a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and some other basic software packages. All went well and the OS went on without a hitch. Drivers loaded without issue.

Then, half way through Firefox setup, the fans began to run flat out. Opened up my copy of SpeedFan to find Sensor 3 was reading at -50C (-58 Fahrenheit). I checked the cables, not knowing there was even a third sensor in the system. All were seated fine. It had me stumped.

Then, I hear a pop, followed by wisps of smoke out of the rear vents and the distinct smell of burning silicon on the motherboard. The computer continued running, smoking away happily as the fans went flat out. I pulled the plug at this point. The machine is toast, completely dead and useless, and with it being a Lenovo desktop the motherboard and case are designed in a strange way so it's impossible to just change the board.

So now I have a 200GB HDD, a 2.0GHz Intel Dual Core CPU and 2GB RAM and nothing to do with it. Not to mention another 2GB RAM and a 2.8GHz Intel Dual Core CPU I already had spare. The rest of the machine is in a tip.

* sigh *

Oh well. 

Anyone else here have any funny or unusual computer related stories they wish to share?

i dropped cola on my laptop keypad and it broke my w key. i had to rip off the wkey because when i tried to type to someone it would go: wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....

 lol so now i have to copy and paste my w...its not critical but it is anoying. :) i also sometimes use my pc controler to write the w xD

The only thing I hate about computers is they take over my life. Because of this I cannot be bothered to turn my PC on any more. However I watch films on here so It's been on for about 5-6 hours now and I am going to turn it off now before I start messing with summets.

xD, yeah i have aswell spilled cola on my keyboad awhile ago. Couldnt function properly anymore >.<

I broke my grandma's pc a few days ago. I had to replace the keyboard socket because it was broken. For some reason replacing it broke the graphics card.

EDIT: Some time ago I've spilt juice on my old keyboard 2 times. It was still working but some keys were getting stuck.

Very lucky, I still have yet to see a laptop with cola in it's keyboard that still works... at least you managed to get away with only one defective key.

I can see that becoming irritating after a while though. Imagine the number of copy and paste operations you'd need to type something like... "While William went to Westchester, Wendy was watching the white winter as she wandered through the woods to work". Oh the horror...

I dropped can of energy drink on the table and some of it spilled on my keyboard.

0 and 1 key hardly presses down now, its the numpad ones btw.

My "w" is also messed up 80% of the time it works but sometimes not.

Ordered a diy kit from new egg a couple months ago.  I had never bought a computer that didn't come fully together, if anything just added a part later but that's not tough at all so I didn't really know a whole lot about assembling it but my uncle said he could help and that he knew all about them.. Horrible idea.

All the parts arrived, started placing things, about 30minutes in I realized he didn't know what he was doing.. He got everything setup to the way he thought it should be.. Plugged it in.. It turned on, but the monitor wasn't getting any signal. So once my uncle left, I just said fuck it and took it to my moms friend who's job is to build pc's and see if he could get it to work..

1st thing he see's, almost all electrical cables are put into the wrong places... So he put them all right, then it got signal on the monitor, but it was turning on and off in 4 second intervals.. He pretty much looked at me and said 'somethings fried'. After looking over the graphics cards and motherboard, he tested the power supply with his power reader thing.. My uncle's bad setup had fried the -5v in the power supply.. He said thats not good but wouldn't cause the on/off issue, he looked at the processor.. My uncle had bent 3 of the prongs in the very corner of my AMD 6core chip..... The guy told me just to throw it out, since that was a warranty void and that its fucked, but I said at least try to bend them back.. With some powerful magnifying glasses and the tiniest tweasers I've ever saw they bent back and it worked!

Got pretty damn lucky, and never going to trust my uncle near anything of mine again. haha

I was playing Soccer in my room, I kicked the ball hard against the wall, but it managed to somehow hit the border of the wall that's sticking out, and the ball directly flew into my laptop and tore the top-left border of the screen, thank god nothing else happened.

oh yea my screen is fooked too xD it has a grayish seethrough line through it... i dnno why though.. good thing is i baught this laptop off my dad for 50 quid and it plays games like s4league and perfect world...considering it looks like someone just headbutted it xD pretty cool :P

Aha, my fathers computer that we still have but havnt used in a year, Every say hour or so, itll just completely crash, ill turn it back on and itll crash sooner, and it keeps doing that. I turn on speedfan and every single fan heat or w.e is running at around 90/100 >.<

One day when I've turned the light on in my room and a lightbulb has exploded and hit my lcd. Fortunately it has left only a small scratch.

one time my brother left a coke-a-cola on the tabel next to a computer. he left for the bathroom and then my cat, furry, jumped on the tabel and spilled the coke on the monitor. it has big black spots now that grow when u touch them. its really **** weird.
