I suppose it's somewhat ironic that it's one of the former EOHax administrators that's become an advocate for security, progress and community spirit. Not particularly because I wanted to, considering my priority was always in trawling these forums and waiting to see what new server projects
would come up with and offering advice from time to time. No, the big reason i've been pushing for some kind of truce in recent threads is because it's what the EOSERV community and its server base has come to.
The problem seems to lie in the fact that certain individuals are too fucking stupid to understand that the idea of running a private server is for enjoyment. Now we have servers getting the shit kicked out of them, servers kicking the shit out of each other, and best of all, servers like FE
throwing a fucking tantrum and splitting off from EOSERV because they don't like the way things are done around here. Nothing to do with EOSERV anymore. Moderators are corrupt. Write your own game software from scratch then (and I mean from scratch, unless you want to infringe on our license) or
deal with it.
I'm not here to offer anyone advice. I'm not here to make accusations as to who is responsible. I'm here to inform certain individuals, and you know who you are, that they and only they are responsible for fucking this up for the rest of us. Single handedly, those who:
- Called war against (other) servers
- Denied service to or exploited (other) servers
- Manipulated the software for malicious intent (such as password harvesting)
- Acted in unethical (dirty/unfair) ways
- Overreacted to basic disputes
- Blatantly stole the work of your peers
- Spammed the shit out of these forums to slander individuals or groups
Have essentially taken the EOSERV project from a relatively promising concept to a hollow shell of its former self. Well done folks. I only take comfort in knowing that your kind is mostly restricted to the internet, probably because keyboard warriors are relegated to pieces of shit in the real
world.
I personally no longer see any need for myself or any other of the staff to contribute to this. Whether they choose to or not is entirely up to them, and i'm sure some other staff will continue to offer their services to individuals looking to start their own servers. However, I will no
longer offer anything to EOSERV.
Over the past couple of years i've provided ideas and concepts to the community on how to promote their servers. I've written up entire documents on the benefits of having a new server and client package written. I've attempted to settle disputes between servers and their staff. I've offered my
services to a number of servers, such as EOServ Legacy and offered some work to Endless Edge, none of which eventuated. All of this culminates in the conclusion that some things never change.
It only makes sense now that some of our biggest name servers are jumping off at a rapid rate and the rate at which new servers are being introduced is slowing. It makes sense that the activity within forums such as the lounge is slowing to a crawl. It even makes sense that EOSERV development is
all but dead, save for a few individuals adding some code here and there. If they weren't so persistent, i'm adamant that this project would have been shut down or abandoned.
What's unfortunate is that it's now the legitimate users that have to suffer its slow and painful demise. Can't say the writing hasn't been on the wall for a very long time though.
The irony then? That those of us that stood by EOSERV for the long run, the supporters and server operators that held out optimism, now have the task of separating themselves from it to survive. No matter how you look at it, that's a community in serious peril.
Oh well. Enjoy.
