Post #60815 Eoserv, the rating system

+ 1 _1 ?  Im just wondering?! ive seen lots get rated -1 for unneeded posts, foul language , etc.
Well what about + 1, God damn ive posted atleast 30 + topics/guides helping our community and not 1 - or +! Im glad no - replys from mods but "im not complaining" but for instance look at jimmyee's pet system " he got a +1" follows you, because your the attacker, "what" whats wrong here, My petsystem is full guide and all, nothin>.< -+ "what" nothin harvs/casino/woodcutting reading from the map editor not ini "then who copied my code and released it as a fishing code??? hmm" etc. Im almost done trying to help this community, people rape my fuken posts not even saying "thank you, good job etc" and then i see my codes on their server "wow" pricks thanx.!

Sorry foul mood, but true fealings!

Insomniac, I'm sure a lot of people do appreciate your posts, especially your trunk, A lot of people found that helpful, Including me. I learnt some new things about how EOSERV works with the NPC's and such like using your trunk. Sure the +- system is kinda stupid. But it doesn't really matter tbh, the ratings got removed from our little avatar box (see left). But I think it's more to point out to moderators who's being a complete idiot. I saw that one guy had like -12 or something, and he got banned because his rating was so low. So I think it's more for those kind of purposes than anything else. The + rating doesn't really seem to do much. No great promotion comes from it. But I agree with you, people that use your code, learn from your code, could be a little more thankful because in the end, the EOSERV community relies on it's contributers to keep it going and those that are more able with C++ tend not to help so much. Only when there's multiple threads for the same topic is when they tend to intervene so you should be patting yourself on the back that you're helping the community more than others.

Jimmyee received the +1 rating from Sordie, who's not around anymore. She was the only one besides Sausage to throw around a few + ratings here and there.

The standard of "EOServ Coding" has gotten higher too. Codes that would blow peoples minds back then, are being thrown around like candy treats now. Various mods such as Apollo and Bart, well, you'll have to achieve something a little more unexpected to get their attention.
Publishing a full guide for something that was done a long time ago may be helpful now, but anyone could of done it to be honest. Like Dan said, there are many able coders around here. And too true, positive ratings will lead nowhere really, unless you think there's a prize or something. Yay for candy treats :D

Post #60837 Re: Eoserv, the rating system

One of the reasons i'm glad we had a moderator rotation is because the two previous heads of moderation staff, Scott and Sordie, were way too happy to throw ratings around. It's an awful method of moderation, considering those with negative values probably don't care, and threads that would normally get positive votes almost never need the attention of a moderator at all. It removes the aspect of a moderator actually doing their job and it detaches the staff from the community at a personal level.

I think you'll find the current moderation staff are more likely to actually reply and discuss issues and arguments, contributing to the natural progression of a thread and reaching some form of conclusion. It's the way we used to do it at EOHax, and it was a formula that worked relatively well.

So don't necessarily be phased at the fact your helpful post didn't receive a positive vote. It's simply because within the staff, we've cut back use of the rating system to the very basics and only really use it to keep track of who has a history of problematic posts (and if you only have one or two, don't worry, some negatives are expected in the forum learning curve).

Besides, positive replies from forum members are the best form of positive reinforcement.

Yeah, Sordie didn't really want anyone having a lower rating than him so she gave him a -200. I'm quite suprised I have a +4 rating; I figured Sausage would've given me a -1 for something.

Anyways, I forget about rating people positives a lot. I usually only do negatives. And someone posted above that a lot of code releases have been released before so I don't think it's that amazing to my eyes.

Post #60867 Re: Eoserv, the rating system

I got a few + ratings from Scott, and I think all of my ratings were because I released something to try and help the community. It's been a while since I've seen much use of the rating system; a lot of posts that are around now would have been minus'd but aren't being moderated the same way because of the staff rotation. Seems like the only posts that get rated down are really awful.

I'm actually kind of glad that it isn't shown under everyone's profile picture now.

That's nice of you, but if it were left to the forum users to decide who gets a +1, every girl user on the forum would have +9999

Leave it to the mods, there's a handful of people that have often been helpful but never received + ratings. If you're a person who expected a + rating for your posts and are pissed that you didn't, well you don't deserve it for that exact reason.

I might regret doing this but for now it's fine. If you find a topic that you think you deserved credit for then try pming me through MSN and I will take a look at it. This does not mean every topic will get you a +1 but if it's a original helpful guide then i'll most likely give it to you. I do tend to forget about rating positive topics.

He does deserve +1, he has given alot of his work out that he could have kept himself.  Also his guides are the only decent guides i've seen in a while.  Way-da-go Inso :P

I always wondered if there is a consequence at all for having a lot of negatives?  Doesn't look like it so, it's almost the same as the Karma quest - except + is rare and of course, the rating is not computer-generated.  I guess it is just for mods to lookout for trollers - if you have -200 they are probably gonna look at your post first.
