Currently the "smartest" option for NPC movement still leaves NPC's at a loss for navigating most obstacles to get to their target. It's common for NPCs to get stuck on edges, in corners, etc, without navigating a successful path to the player.

At the very least I wanted to change it to pathfind for a small number of tiles so it doesn't get stuck behind a single tile.

r484 addresses the most obvious flaw when an NPC has to walk left/right to navigate around a corner.
